Learning Outcome # 2
I believe that my final draft of Project 1 demonstrates my ability to select sources that provide evidence supporting my writing as well as my ability to explain those quotations meaningfully. Throughout this paper, I integrated several different quotes from Lizzie Widdicombe’s essay as well as my favorite meal essay, all of which helped support my paper’s claim. I used Barclay’s formula twice throughout my paper, which allowed me to connect a quote from Widdicombe to one of my own and explain how they are evidence supporting my argument. For example, in the second paragraph of my paper, I wrote about how one who survives only on Soylent misses out on the sentimental and socialization parts of eating. I used a quote from Widdicombe “spaghetti nights and ice cream socials replaced by sipping sludge” to help support the idea that eating food provides a time to be social. I was then able to integrate a quote from me to strengthen that point. “One of my favorite things to do is help her in the kitchen… I get to see where my favorite meal came from”. I used this quote to bring in my personal opinion and explain how cooking brings my family together in a way that would not be possible without food. I wrote about how being in the kitchen and eating brings so many different families and friends together as a way to connect my chosen quotes and explain my reasoning behind incorporating them into the paragraph all together. I believe my use of Barclay’s formula allowed me to use several pieces of evidence to strongly back up my opinion in this paper.
