Learning Outcome # 4
I believe that I was able to provide helpful comments and suggestions for my peers. I incorporated both positive feedback and suggestions to make the papers stronger and clearer for the readers. When I am reading other classmates writing, I like to make sure that I am adding positive comments throughout their essay, whether it be about a quote they picked or a well-written sentence. For example, in Jack’s essay, when introducing the topic of a paragraph he wrote “What happens when we lose touch with the actual process of preparing and indulging in a meal with family”. I found this sentence as a perfect way to introduce his paragraph and I thought it to be extremely well-written, so I made sure to leave a comment praising him for it. I make sure that I leave thoughtful suggestions when peer reviewing someone’s work because it is extremely helpful when other people do the same for me. When reading through essays, I leave comments where I feel things could be clearer or introduced better, and then I used the feedback letter to provide a more thoughtful response to the essay. For example, in Jack’s essay, I noticed that he did not introduce the creator of Soylent by name until the end of the essay. I left a comment on the paragraph, but in the letter, I explained my thought process for the comment, and why it might be confusing to the reader. I also use the comments as talking points during our peer review time in class. I make sure to leave a comment that is detailed enough that the writer can understand what I am trying to say, but I like to go into more detail when I can actually explain and talk about it. I also make sure to point out any spelling mistakes that I see because those can be so easily missed. When I peer review, I make sure to provide feedback that is polite but also thoughtful and helpful for the writer.
