Learning Outcome # 5&6
I believe that my Chosen Work Sample shows my ability to correctly use MLA guidelines when citing sources. In Project 1, there was only one external source that I quoted, Lizzie Widdicombe’s essay, which was not something that I wrote myself. Every time that I pulled a quote from her essay I made sure to properly cite it, using both in-text citations and my works cited page at the end. I find it very important to give credit when I use someone else’s words, so I always make sure to use in-text citations. While drafting my paper, I included the quotes I took from Widdicombe, but did not add the citations or works cited until after I had finished revising my draft. After the class where we reviewed the importance of MLA and citations, I made sure to properly cite Widdicombe in my works cited section. I also made several local revisions to my essay as I drafted it. This included fixing a few spelling errors that my peers pointed out, like the misspelling of Widdicombe, as well as a few grammatical errors, like not including a comma or having run-on sentences when they can easily be broken up. These little local revisions that my peers recommended made a huge impact on the clarity of my final draft. I made sure that as I was drafting my paper, I kept proofreading it and had others read it as well to catch any small errors that I had written. I believe that this work sample, from the original draft to the final one, shows my overall ability to correctly cite sources using MLA as well as make local revisions.
